About the project
The research vessel METEOR (short: RV Meteor) with its length of almost 100 meters is one of the biggest German research vessels. During a research cruise for the exploration of the ecosystem of deep-sea volcanoes we learned from the crew, that the main deck had to be repaired soon. 450 square meters of thick tropical wood planks should be replaced.
Thanks to the kind help of the “Leitstelle Deutsche Forschungsschiffe”, the coordinating center for the RV Meteor at the University of Hamburg and the senate commission the German Research Council and the German Ministry of Education and Research agreed to let AQUEIS have the old deck from the shipyard.
Subsequently the “Project METEORHOLZ” (Holz = wood) was initiated by biologists from the HYDRA Institute for Marine Sciences and the group of young designers WIR from Bremen. The wooden planks are drying now in a storage, and step by step furniture and objects will be produced from it. The sales revenue will allow AQUEIS e.V. to realize a variety of projects.
